An Ethernet switch forms a central hub within a wired Ethernet network. The components involved in the network are connected to the Ethernet ports of the switch via Ethernet cables. The switch takes over the management for the communication exchange and regulates the data flow between the connected components.
Furthermore, a free port of the switch can also be used as a so-called uplink to establish a connection to another switch which is thereby integrated into the network and enlarges it or provides free ports for further components which are likewise to be integrated into the network.
